What Is The Best Natural Seat Cushion?
Natural seat cushions are the way to go if you want a healthier and more sustainable option for your furniture. Vinyl/polyurethane filled cushions emit all types of chemicals, which can be harmful to humans and animals alike. This article will explore the differences between natural and synthetic seat cushions, as well as how they are made, what they do for us, and why you should pick one over the other!
As a general rule, natural latex is the best natural material for seat cushions. The sap of Hevea brasiliensis trees is used to make natural latex. It is common for natural latex foam to be left untreated with chemicals or fillers after harvesting, which gives it more flexibility than memory foams.
It is my area of expertise to design seat cushions and mattresses. I have studied these topics for 30 years and have developed healthy foam cushions, mattresses, and pillows for a variety of purposes. My designs always include natural and eco-friendly materials that support your body.
Here I will offer you a recommendation for your seat cushion made from the best natural materials that feel comfortable to you. Throughout my experience with countless clients, I have learned several important things that will help you feel most comfortable. Let me explain each one.
Here are some foams that I can’t recommend:
For most seat cushions, polyurethane (PU) foams are used because they are relatively affordable. It is likely to result in cheap, but low-quality furniture if you purchase furniture from a big-box chain or online retailer. In spite of its low price, polyurethane foam is not of high quality. It will provide some comfort, but not in the same way as high-resilience foam. Later on in this post, I will explain what I mean.
Memory Foams vs. Polyurethane Foams
- There are some significant differences in their textures. In both cases, polyurethane is used.
- During the manufacturing process, additional chemicals are added to memory foam, which makes it denser than polyurethane foam.
- They both have similar chemical properties but feel completely different. Pressure on memory foam will create a sinking sensation while PU foam will appear much springier.
- Polyurethane foam is a synthetic petrochemical material. Foams made of polyurethane cannot be characterized as ‘natural,’ unlike latex, which is usually natural.
Some Benefits of Memory Foams and Polyurethane Foams
- Low cost, especially for PU foams of lower quality.
- Using a cheaper chemical process to make a seat cushion can save you money
- Easily portable
Disadvantages of Memory Foam and Polyurethane Foam
- Tend to off-gas toxic VOC fumes
- Airflow in polyurethane foams is poor – poorly ventilated
- A lack of spinal support could lead to pressure points
- It’s uncomfortable
- Weak and slow to return to its original shape.
- Short lifetime
Gel cushions consist of polymer pieces that can be flat or contoured. The gels do not flow or move like liquid gels, so they are not damaged if their plastic container ruptures.
It’s typical for gel cushions to have gel-infused tops, this one commonly features a memory foam base. The most common material that is used in the making of these types of foams is crude oil-based polyurethane. As you could guess, this compound is extracted from the refinement of crude oil, which might explain its toxicity. In the making of memory foam, polyurethane can be mixed with PVC, antimony trioxide, boric acid, and other harmful compounds.
These pillows do not appear to possess the contouring properties and cooling properties that conform to your body. We found that our customers felt that the pads didn’t provide adequate cooling or comfort.
Another popular gel cushion is this silicon-based honeycomb foam. With the ability to allow the air to flow, you sweat less with these cushions. Silicone is renowned for its durability, but the product’s tendency to bottom out easily made it unwieldy for users.
Cushions Made of Down or Feathers
Feather cushions are really cool, but they have a ton of downsides. They get old and need to be fluffed once in a while for optimal use. And although they provide some structure when used by themselves as an ottoman or footrest, you might find that if your furniture is very soft it can sometimes lose its shape without down fillings beneath it- which means more expenses than just buying feather seat cushions!
Here are some foams that I DO recommend:
Natural Latex Foams
The natural latex foam is made from tree sap. The milky sap collected on the bark of this special type of tree, Hevea brasiliensis, is used to make it! In a cool way that’s really neat and tidy – because you know how children are always asking “why?” so much? It turns out there’s something called inherent springiness in all types of things like plants or animals (like cats!). This means they can bounce back when stretched without breaking easily.
Latex foam is one of the best and highest quality materials for seat cushions because it’s springy. It also has a great feel, which makes them perfect for continuous use all day long. That means you’re guaranteed to be comfortable! One more reason why people love latex foam? They have a bounce in their construction that keeps your discs healthy by preventing pressure points caused by sitting still too often over an extended period of time.
A huge demand exists for latex cushions thanks to their renowned comfort and support. Upon sitting on a latex cushion, you would notice how soft and cosy it is, as well as how firm it is because of its uniformly supporting clouds in your colourful adventures! In addition to the benefits of being comfortable, however, there are also many other reasons why so many people love them too–even more than just being comfy like I said before!–such as they’re really durable which means that with all these great features (and even some others!), one can’t go wrong when investing in buying this kind of seat cushion.
The Benefits of Natural Latex Foams
- Contains no toxic chemicals – derived from nature
- In comparison to other materials, leather supports the spine exceptionally well. Exceptional comfort
- Mould- and dust-mites-resistant.
- Good ventilation
- A movement that is soft
- Lasts a long time
The synthetic, vinyl-filled seat cushions that are so prevalent in today’s furniture stores emit harmful chemicals into the air and should be avoided. If you want to create a healthier home for your family or just make smarter choices when it comes to what we put on our furniture, then natural seat cushions like those from Therapist Choice can provide relief by being chemical-free.
