I recently read an article that said sitting makes you tired. Huh? How can something as simple as sitting make me exhausted? I was sceptical, but after doing some of my own research, I found that there might be some truth to this statement. Sitting for long periods does apparently have some pretty nasty effects on our energy levels. So why does sitting make us so tired? Let’s take a look at the science behind it.

As a general rule, sitting for long periods can leave you feeling tired and drain the energy from your body. Studies indicate that when people are seated with nothing to do, their heart rates decrease while their levels of brain chemicals like dopamine decrease as well!.

In this article, I will explain why your legs hurt after sitting. This will be founded on my 30 years of advising, treating patients facing similar challenges, researching, designing simple solutions (even a successful Kickstarter campaign!). I even published a book about the topic.

Why Am I Physically Exhausted After Sitting Down All Day?

We’ve all been there. You sit down at your desk to start your workday, and by the end of it you feel like you could fall asleep on your keyboard. You might feel a little sore like you’ve just run a marathon. So what’s going on?

It turns out that a few things are happening when you sit for long periods that can lead to physical exhaustion. Seating is not a very efficient way to use your energy. When you’re standing or moving around, your muscles are constantly contracting and relaxing, which helps to keep your blood flowing and your body oxygenated. But when you’re sitting, those muscles aren’t working as hard, which means that blood flow slows down, and you feel sluggish.

Another reason you might feel exhausted after sitting all day is because of the way your body is positioned when you’re seated. When you’re standing, your spine is in a straight line and your head is balanced on top of it. But when you sit, your spine starts to round forward, and your head droops down, which puts a lot of strain on your neck and back muscles. Over time, this can lead to pain and fatigue.

Finally,  sitting for long periods can also lead to mental exhaustion. When we’re constantly sitting, our brains don’t have the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. We become overstimulated by the constant input from our screens and the continuous stream of work that needs to be done. This can lead to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, contributing to physical exhaustion.

If you feel exhausted after a day spent sitting, there are a few things you can do to help mitigate the effects. First, make sure you take frequent breaks to move around and get your blood flowing. Standing up and stretching for a few minutes every hour can make a big difference. Second, try to sit with good posture, keeping your spine straight and your head aligned with your shoulders. And finally, make sure to give your brain a break from time to time by taking some time to relax and de-stress.

Why Does Sitting Cause Fatigue?

Additionally, poor posture and slouching in your chair can lead to muscle tension and stiffness, contributing to fatigue. If you feel tired after sitting for a while, try getting up and moving around every 20 minutes or so to help improve your energy levels.

Best Tip for Not Getting Tired While Sitting?

Poor sitting posture is the most common cause of fatigue from sitting, according to my professional experience. I recommend the following simple solution to my patients:

You can engage your core muscles while adjusting your spine with an orthopaedic seat wedge. Easy, isn’t it? Indeed!

An orthopedic seat wedge is a solution I recommend. Sitting wedges give you a better sitting surface and allow your upper leg to be angled higher than your torso. While wedge chairs provide a more comfortable sitting experience, you’ll still need to sit upright while using them.

When appropriately used, orthopedic wedge cushions keep you seated upright. Their forward tilt helps to improve your lower back’s inward curve. Your spine will be less stressed by sitting upright, distributing your weight naturally and preventing strain on your joints, discs, and ligaments.

How Do You Not Get Tired While Sitting?

There’s no one answer to this question since everyone has different energy levels and thresholds for fatigue. However, there are a few things that you can do to help yourself stay awake and not get tired while sitting.

– First, make sure that you’re getting enough sleep at night. This is crucial to have the energy to stay awake during the day.

– Second, try to move around every so often, even if it’s just shifting in your seat or stretching your legs. This helps keep your blood flowing and prevents you from getting too stiff and sore.

– Third, focus on what you’re doing and pay attention to your work or the task. This will help prevent you from letting your mind wander and feeling tired.

– Finally, try to eat healthy foods throughout the day to give you sustained energy instead of spikes and crashes. This includes things like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein.

Does Sitting at a Desk All Day Make You Tired?

Sitting at a desk all day can make you tired for several reasons. First, if you sit in the same position for long periods, your body can become tense and uncomfortable. This can lead to muscle fatigue, which can make you feel tired. Additionally, if you are not getting up and moving around frequently throughout the day, your circulation can become stagnant, making you feel tired. 

Finally, if you are working on a computer or staring at a screen all day, your eyes can become strained, contributing to feelings of fatigue. If you feel tired after sitting at a desk all day, try to take breaks every 20 minutes or so to move around and stretch. Additionally, be sure to take a break from screens every so often to give your eyes a rest. Finally, try to get up and walk around for a few minutes every hour to keep your circulation going.

As you can see, various factors can contribute to feeling tired after sitting in bed. If you have any concerns, it’s best to speak with your doctor. In the meantime, try to get up and move around every few hours to keep your energy levels up. And make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day.

-You are not getting enough sleep: Most adults need around 7-8 hours per night. If you are not getting this much sleep, it can lead to fatigue during the day. Consider making some changes to your sleep habits, such as going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, avoiding caffeine and alcohol before bed, and creating a relaxing bedtime routine.

-You have an underlying medical condition: Many medical conditions can cause fatigue. If you are frequently feeling tired, talk to your doctor to rule out any potential health issues.

-You are taking certain medications: Many medications can cause fatigue as a side effect. If you are taking medication and think it might be causing your sleepiness, talk to your doctor about alternative options.

-You have a sleep disorder: Sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnea can make it challenging to get a good night’s rest, leading to fatigue during the day. If you think you might have a sleep disorder, talk to your doctor.

There are many potential causes of feeling tired while lying in bed. If you are frequently feeling exhausted, talk to your doctor to rule out any underlying health issues. Consider making some changes to your sleep habits, and you may find that you feel more rested during the day.

Although the jury is still out on whether or not sitting makes us tired, there’s certainly enough evidence to suggest that it’s not suitable for our energy levels. So what can we do about it? Try to take regular breaks throughout the day, get up and move around as often as possible, and schedule some time for physical activity.
